Gina Ruggeri

plumeuprootupturfuntitled-sketchimg_2082_1Cave, pen and ink on paper, 22 x 30 inchesimg_2092_1 (more…)

Gina Ruggeri’s drawings for Works on Paper range from spontaneous pen and ink sketches to large, densely worked graphite drawings made in preparation for her paintings. Layers of calligraphic lines generate complex topographies in these iconographic representations of natural objects. Mineral and vegetal forms seem animate, even sentient, and are often shown in a state of flux or decay. Their tone is at once ominous and absurd, striking an uneasy balance of the familiar and the strange.
