Meghan Brady
Essay by Mark Wethli, 2006
On a recent visit to Meghan Brady’s studio, I was looking forward to seeing some drawings of hers that I’d admired a few months before. I’d thought of them often since that time and was looking forward to seeing them again. She showed me a few things that were equally impressive, but when I asked to see the ones I’d seen before, she replied, “these are the ones you saw before.”
I‘ve heard it said that one measure of a great work of art is that you remember it perfectly after seeing it but when you see it again it’s different than you remembered. I’d always understood and appreciated that idea in principle but until that moment in Meghan’s studio I’d never experienced it first-hand. I wondered how these drawings could look so different than they had the first time around. Was it my mood? The context they were in? The difference was so significant I knew it had to be more than that. (more…)
